Chip Seal (aka "Tar and Chip" or "Seal and Chip") is an attractive and effective resurfacing method that has been used for over a century. Chip seal surfaces are virtually maintenance-free and less expensive than asphalt. In addition, it offers many color options and shades of stone. Tar and chip can be applied right over an existing base, such as concrete, blacktop, or gravel.

In the first step of the process, a quarter inch of hot liquid asphalt or tar is applied to the base surface. This liquid binds the base to the stone chip finish and acts as a seal.

A layer of thin stone is then spread over the hot tar and raked to cover and smooth. The stones are then firmly embedded into the tar using a roller machine.
